Every finished piece is checked against the original specification before it’s scheduled for delivery dimensions, finish quality, fabric application and structural integrity. Catching an issue on the factory floor is far less disruptive than catching it during installation in a client’s home or a hotel room that’s about to open to guests.
When a client signs off on a design concept, most furniture companies hand that concept to a third-party manufacturer and hope the finished product matches what was approved on paper. At Independent, that handoff doesn’t happen — because there’s no one to hand it to. Everything is built in our own factory in Al Quoz, by our own team, from the same design that was approved in your consultation.
Before anything is manufactured, clients choose from physical fabric, wood and finish samples not photos or digital renders. Colours and textures read differently on screen than they do under the lighting conditions of an actual room, so every material decision on a project is made against something you can hold, not something you’re guessing at from a catalog image.
Once materials are confirmed, the approved design concept moves directly to our production floor. Because our design team and our factory sit under the same roof, there’s no translation gap between what a designer specified and what the carpenters and upholsterers actually build the same measurements, finishes and construction details carry straight through.

Our Al Quoz facility isn’t a single production line, it’s several specialist workshops working in parallel:
Joinery and carpentry. Custom cabinetry, wardrobes and bespoke furniture pieces are cut, assembled and finished here, built to the exact dimensions measured on site rather than standard sizes.
Upholstery. Sofas, cushions, headboards and bed benches are built from the frame up timber or metal frame construction, foam and fill selection, then upholstered in the client’s chosen fabric or leather.
Curtains and soft furnishings. Since 2002, curtain and blind manufacturing has been one of the founding services of the business, and it’s still made to measure on-site fabric, lining, drop and mechanism cut and sewn to the exact window dimensions.
Having all three under one roof means a sofa, its matching cushions and the curtains for the same room can be coordinated on fabric and finish during manufacturing, rather than ordered separately from different suppliers and hoped to match.

The team that installs your furniture, curtains or joinery on site is drawn from the same organisation that built it — not a separate subcontracted installation crew working from someone else’s paperwork. That continuity matters most on complex fit-outs, where a small on-site adjustment (a wall that’s not perfectly square, a socket in an unexpected spot) can be resolved immediately by people who understand exactly how the piece was built.
The point of manufacturing everything in-house isn’t just efficiency, it’s accountability. When one team designs, builds and installs a piece, there’s no ambiguity about who’s responsible if something needs adjusting, and no gap where a design intention gets lost between a drawing and a factory that’s never met the client. Twenty years and more than a thousand projects in, that’s still the part of how we work that hasn’t changed.
